Guest Bedroom Makeover

Project Overview:

The queen mattress in this small guest bedroom of a rental loft apartment had to stay, leaving very little space for two pairs of closet doors to open into the room. The solution was to use a queen-size daybed tucked into the opposite corner and under the window. The solid dark blue of its upholstery makes it appear smaller within that space. Variations of that same blue reappear on the art pieces at the head of the bed, creating color unity that helps expand the small space. The room is more spacious vertically than horizontally, and to balance its proportions visually, the large-scale artworks and light fixtures are positioned to utilize and emphasize the room’s verticality. The blue accent color swims in a sea of neutral hues on a variety of surfaces—the textured softness of the rug and bedding, the lacquered shells of the stool, the madrona-burl finish pattern of the dresser—again working in unity to expand the space. The soft upholstery and rounded furniture corners counter the sharp angularity of the interior architecture.
