Personal Project Showcase

This is my pied-à-terre apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria. Its small footprint consists of one main room that combines a living, dining, and kitchen areas, besides a compact bedroom, bathroom, hallway, and balcony. This temporary lodging was designed and completed in the haste of vacation travel, mostly before and after flights to America, while splitting our time between the capital and my hometown three hours away.

We purchased it more than 10 years ago completely unfinished. All that was there were doors, windows, and concrete walls, floors, and ceilings. We hired a construction crew to plaster and paint the walls before our vacation trip, which we spent touring the furniture emporiums that had sprung like mushrooms all over Sofia during the building boom at the time.

In a largely unfamiliar market, we had to speedily buy everything, from flooring, tiles and bathroom fixtures to electrical appliances and furniture, to lighting and drapery. The custom-made kitchen and living-room cabinets, and the rest of the furniture that we ordered from showrooms had to be assembled and installed on subsequent trips. Although furnished rather hastily and economically from a very blank slate, the apartment has everything we need for our brief stays here. Check out some more images in the video.
