Dining Room Makeover

Project Overview:

A very constrained space is what characterizes this dining area that is also a transitional zone to the kitchen. The minimal obstruction of movement to and from the kitchen was the client’s north star for this room update. The design is achieving that goal by using furniture that folds or opens to serve different purposes. The dining table folds to a complete console or opens one or two leaves depending on how it’s being used. Folding chairs stand ready to accommodate guests, while a cushioned bench provides everyday seating comfort to the home’s single resident.

Positioned by the wall, the bench also reorients the viewpoint of a person seating there towards the rest of the space vs. staring at the wall in the old design. The Meandering Stream canvas and three-dimensional compositions in the other two artworks expand the space further—”to the horizon” and in endless spirals. The bleached jute of the chandelier and the rice paper in the shadow boxes add natural texture to the pictured nature landscape nearby.

The room was transformed during a full-condo renovation to refresh and brighten the space. It involved refinishing and whitewashing the parquet floor and repainting the walls, doors, window frames and molding the same room color to unify and visually expand the space.
